Game Development

mwunsch:

To me, game development is probably the most enigmatic, elusive, difficult things a programmer could possibly embark on. I have an Amazon wish list filled with books on Networking code and AI code and physics code in the hope that one day I will have dicked around in JavaScript and debugging Internet Explorer long enough that I have, through some bizarre act of code osmosis, picked up the talent and the knowledge necessary to understand what the hell this stuff means. It’s fucking hard.
And then once I have mastered sockets and machine learning and whatever the fuck, I’d still have to know how to DESIGN a game that people are actually interested in playing. And then I’d have to know how to make it aesthetically pleasing. This makes the thought of developing a game solamente completely mind-blowing.

The whole post is a great analysis of the state of Minecraft from someone who’s never played it, but this part in particular rang true to me.
